If you want to know the actual legal foundation for not allowing it, it is because states want to encourage male-female marriage ceremony because they believe that a father and mother is the optimal setting for raising children. I don't believe here are any good reason why it should be illegal.

- The tradition excuse - Traditions change over time for miscellaneous reasons. It use to be tradition that women stayed home and took supervision of the house. Not any more.

- The reproduction excuse - Then marriage should not be allowed to hetero citizens that either settle on not to have kids, or are sterile.

- The consecration of marriage excuse - Then divorce should be outlawed, or harder to gain than it is now. Where's the consecration of marriage when you can run to Vegas, get married on a Friday and divorced by the time you budge back to work on Monday?

- The "where on earth does it stop" excuse - They say, "If we allow gay marriage ceremony, then folks will want to marry their pets, or children, or we will need to standardize polygamy." Two words: CONSENTING ADULTS. I believe the government should stay out of the method of what consenting adults want to do. Dogs and cats cannot give their consent, and kids are not adults. Polygamy should be trial, as long as all party consent to it.
