Can a sentence be overturned?

a coworker told me her 19yr son was sentence to 20 yrs within prison or particpating in a robbery..his first offense..he saw his attorney once but during that time he had him sign some paperwork knowing that his reading is not credit. Therefore he was signing his sentencing papers. Please do not say aloud he did the crime do the time. what we are trying to figure out how reasonable is this situation. also i am appauld as an tax payer where on earth there are irredeemable offenders that with the sole purpose get sentence for 2, 4, 5 yrs but on youth that may had a karma for rehab gets his time taken from him

I grew up in the suburbs of southern California within a little social bubble anyone constantly bombarded with social ideals...foremost me to the belief that criminals were locked up to protect society and that the punishment for their crimes was forever one labeled an ex-convict, with adjectives the employment and life style consequences that be apart of that label.
It seem now that would be labeled nouns and deemed inadequate, prison terms are anyone shortened and rehabilitation programs exceed development programs available to the decree abiding citizens.

We are entering a not here swing of the pendulum in corrections. Societies thinking on corrections changes every so habitually from lock-em-up to, lets rehabilitate and permit them be free. As can be seen by recent attitudes on networks similar to the discovery channel, or science furrow, programs depict prison overcrowding, inmates teaching themselves better technique, and so on. Otherwise giving a clear picture of fiasco in regard to our current prison system in the path it currently operates. Our recent lock-em-up attitude toward crime, have as we are being told, spoilt. First of all, for rehabilitation to work, one must realise they hold a problem. Then, they have to want to exchange. Not just follow along next to the program to obtain that shortened sentence. They must want to modify otherwise it is a waste of physical exertion on our part.

In my feelings, this is also a generational thing going on here. Never in the past in our nation history, has near been such disrespect for authority. And not a short time ago law enforcement. Parents, teacher, Grandparents, coaches, clergy, you name it, it is other someone elses fault but their own. No child, juvenile, or young fully developed will take clear, influential responsibility for their own actions. Thanks to parents... Role-models suing over a hot cup of coffee, spilled while driving. Absolutely ridiculous. That's what I want to drill my kid, how to take profit of the system and evade personal responsibility.
