To be rather honest either of the choices you stated are quicker. The one entity though that I am confused by personally is they type of freedom of the children you are looking at. I've heard of a 'poorman's copyright.' That's when you put your manuscript into an envelope and communication it to yourself. Then if you believe someone has plagiarized your work, you can use the hermetically sealed envelope as proof you wrote your work first. I haven't heard of this technique successfully one used legally, though. If you plan on publishing, you should take an official copyright anyway. I'm not sure how this would apply to patent, unless you mail yourself the blueprints to your invention.
