Does you Insurance company inform you when someone is filing suit against you?

I was in a accident with a friend and she told me she's not suing my insurance just the other parties, but for some reason I don't trust her. If I was being sued by her would my insurance company inform me? She might just be suing the other person, because I got no calls or letters from my insurance that the was suing. Another one of my friends just hit someone from behind and she received a letter in the mail in a week that said that the girl was suing her insurance. Why didn't I get a letter or a call if my backstabbing friend is suing my insurance?

No one can "sue" your insurance. If someone were to make a claim against you, that person would have to put you on notice, then sue you if you don't agree to pay.
The only thing you have to do is report accidents to your insurance company. Then let the company handle any claims.

First of all, a person injured in a car accident does not start by suing an insurance company unless the company--their own company--is not honoring medical bills or lost wage claims. For the accident itself, the injured person sues the drivers and owners of the cars. Let's say there's a three car accident involving you, the plaintiff, and a third party. The plaintiff is your friend, so she does not sue you. So what? The other car's insurance company will bring you into the case as a third-party defendant.

So make sure you notify your insurance company and file the police report. When the lawsuit against you is started, you will receive a letter from the plaintiff's lawyer asking you to accept service of the summons. Call your insurance company before you sign off on it, as they may wish to make the plaintiff's life harder...or would use your acceptance of service as an excuse to avoid covering you.

But whatever you do, make sure your insurance company is on notice of the accident.
