Can you leave the room during the Bar Exam?
My husband is getting ready to take the Bar Exam (for law, not to be a bartender) and we had an interesting discussion about whether or not you were allowed to leave the room during the exam for bathroom breaks? Odd question I know, but I'm curious!

The answer is...it depends (an answer your husband should know well from law school). It depends entirely on the jursidiction that is administering the test. Some jurisdictions do not allow you to leave the room until you are ready to have your answers graded. Some will allow you to raise your hand, have a proctor approach you, and give you permission. I took the bar in Maryland and we picked up our testing materials, handed them to a proctor, went to the bathroom, then came back to get the materials from the proctor to continue answering questions.
Out of curiosity...what bar can he be taking? The bar is only offered twice a year--at the end of July and the end of February and if I've done my math correctly, this is August...
Sure he can. If he wants to sit again in 6 months for another try.
TO TARA: Ahhhhh but how long did it take you <grin>
You should see the one I had to take for the Hague..just to get certified. I thought I would have to take a break, meet a girl, have a baby THEN hand the baby over before they would let me pass.
Yes, you can take a bathroom break as long as you have budgeted into your time. You have to raise your hand and the proctors take your test. It is best to try and practice without breaks, so you can get used to it. Many people run out of time. However, I took a bathroom break on two separate bar exams (because I drank too much coffee) and passed both times.
Yes. At least in California. The California Bar Exam is held over 3 days. Each day consists 6-hours of recollecting legal information that you never imagined you'd ever use in your line of practice. You are allowed to take bathroom breaks, lunch breaks, coffee breaks, etcetera. Preparatory instructors and the proctors encourage short breaks.
I've taken the Bar Exam in 2 states, and both times, it was in a facility that had a bathroom inside the exam room. You cannot leave the exam room during the test, unless you are ready to hand in your answers.
Some states send applicants very detailed instructions. (New Jersey even included an actual-size diagram of the only type of sandwich bag one can use to bring pencils, pens, car keys, etc. into the exam room.) These instructions will likely include information about bathroom use. If not, your husband can call the local board of bar examiners.
