Copyright advice?

I am looking for some clarification on what the UK laws are for an artists work.

Specifically, I work with paint shop pro, photoshop and other programs and make forum signatures and email sigantures for people. I use artwork sourced on the internet for this. I do this as a hobby, it is not for profit and I make no money doing this. As long as I credit the artist somewhere on the work am I breaking the law?

I know that in America it is considered theft and you have to purchase a licence to use certain artists work.

Some advice from someone in the know would be nice. Thanks.

Answers:
Actually, in the US, if you are not making a profit, it's technically not illegal. HOWEVER, wherever you are, it's always a good idea to ask first.

Think of it from the perspective of the artist. If it was your work and someone was going to do with it what you intend to do, would you be happy about it? If the answer is no, you probably have a copyright violation.
