Haven't we gone too far with this Privacy Act nonsense?

My cousin had a baby boy the other day. Her mother-in-law was in the waiting room when the baby was born. So, the nurse comes out and tells her that mother and child are doing fine. Then she asks the nurse "is it boy or a girl?" The nurse replies "I can't tell you. The Privacy Act forbids me from telling you."
Isn't that absolutely ridiculous ???

Answers:
It is funny how we managed without the privacy laws for many many years and what harm did that cause? absolutely nothing. Things have gone beyond a joke when a even a family member cannot be informed of their grandchild's sex. Its the bleeding heart liberal types that are eroding our freedoms with false innuendos that these things affect a persons privacy.

sometimes yes
The nurse was misinformed.
No it is not. The mother-in-law has no legal right to even know the child was born. And the cousin's own parents have no control over the child's body.

The nurse was correct. If the mother-in-law wanted to know the sex of the baby, then she needs to ask the mother. Plain and simple.
Sure, I'd want my medical information shouted to everyone too.

Ok, people do act inconsistently. But there are 2 privacy acts this is HIPPA.
I assume you mean HIPAA.

First of all, no, we haven't gone too far. You don't get to decide how much privacy someone else wants. That's the point of it. Maybe you're really an estranged husband who is stalking your cousin or something. Who knows? The nurse doesn't know, only the patient does. She has a right to privacy of all the information.

Second, the nurse is full of it anyway. If she can't tell you the sex of the child, she couldn't tell you that the mother and child are doing fine either, but she did.
