I've always wondered...?

What happens if you have a warrant out for your arrest what is the process when you turn yourself in? Do you get locked up? Also do you get a criminal record if its for something minimal like a traffic offense?

Answer:
It depends on the laws in your state. If you turn yourself in, you will likely be required to post a bond before they'll let you out. If it's for a traffic offense, you can usually just call and ask how much you owe and then go pay (get a receipt). If a bench warrant has been issued, it will be removed once your payment hits the system. Be prepared to pay at least double the original fine. Also, a traffic event will go on your record but nobody cares. Hope this helps.

the warrant is what will go on your record. you go to the police station in the county the warrant is issued. you will be locked up until you satisfy the warrant. if you owe a court fee, you will sit there till the fee is paid. usually about $60 a day or so. best to just pay the fee in that case.
If you have a warrant out for your arrest, the next time the police run into you (for instance a traffic stop b/c you have a burned out tail light) they can arrest you. If it is not a big offense, call the court and find out what you need to do to take care of the charges and get the warrant set aside (a warrant is issued b/c you didn't show up in court and agreeing to show up should solve that problem.) Call the public defenders office in your state for help if you don't want to get a private atty. Normally for a small traffic offense (and that does NOT include DUIs) there is no criminal record for those offenses, but to be safe plead "no contest" or "nolo contendre" rather than guilty if you work out a plea. Hope that helps.
It depends on the warrant. Generally the warrant carries a bond amount. When you turn yourself in you will be processed into the system. Once that is done if you have the bond or can get it you go free until You will be given a court date.

Now if it is a no-bond warrant you are in jail until a judge gets to see your smiling face. You already have a record with the traffic offense. If the judge decides to prosecute because the warrant had to be issued, you could be found guilty of a felony.
