Was it right for america to prohibit alcohol in the early part of the 20 century and if so, why?
Answers:
No, it was extremely foolish. Alcohol has been almost universally drunk since remote antiquity, so it's use is deeply ingrained in society. Trying to stamp out it's use without overwhelming public consent was idiotic and bound to end in tears.
The church elitists were the beginning of the revolt. Alcohol then was like drugs nowdays.
Right or wrong, it turned out to be a bad idea.
It's not right for a government to prohibit people from ingesting any substance they want, but keep the drunk driving laws in place.
there were more alcoholics during prohibition then any other time in history cause of home made brews (moonshine) had higher % alcohol. so it was wrong to ban legal sale of alcohol cause people always found ways to drink & the drinks were alot stronger.
Don't be daft. It's was so obviously wrong or it would still be on the books. It must be one of the very few laws that have ever been repealed.
it had its up and downs. that what led alot of people, to revolt in there own ways and sneaking it by
yes ! and it should still be banned - alcohol is drugs and no good comes from it. only pads the already padded pockets of greedy, rich people who want to make a profit even at the expense of someone Else's health - same as smoking cigarettes and cigars - they should be outlawed as well.
it seems in the early part of the 20th century there were still a few morals around...
By right do you mean morally just or the correct course of action for the country? America always had a temperance movement and a puritan element from the founding fathers onwards. So to try and answer, certainly morally justified for some, an infringement for others and a terrific opportunity for "organised crime."
No. It made an activity most people did illegal because of a small vocal minority.
prohibition was the futile trial of a government to educate their people in raisonable behaviour towards a drug.
the consequences we all know: smuggling, murder, war-like conditions on the streets.
probition only proves one thing: forbidden things are even more seducing!
