I need a lawyer, how should I go about this process?

So I need a lawyer. This after an incident with my defender today.

I've been charged with harassment and I explained that the defendant and I were involved in a practical joke war that has gotten blown out of proportion. She basically said that what she did was ok and what I did was bizarre and unacceptable.

So I decided I need new representation.

How should i go about this? I was referred to an attorney but her retainer fee is 5k that I don't currently have. I'm more than willing to pay a lawyer, I just don't have the money to pay in full.
What should i do?

Answers:
You could try telling the judge what happened and see if he gives you a new defender. Otherwise, you're going to have to either cough up the money or stick with the one you have.

sound like an impractical joke
Perhaps I misunderstand you, but it sounds as if you are a defendant in a criminal case. That would make you the defendant and her the victim (for the purposes of the case, regardless of who is really to blame).

First, contact the Bar Association in the state where you live and ask for a referral list of attorneys for people with lower incomes. There will likely be attorneys in your area who would be willing to take a smaller retainer or even work for a flat fee. If there is a Public Defender's office (attorneys who are appointed by the court to represent those who cannot pay), you might try calling them and asking for a referral to a defense attorney.

Make sure that regardless of whether you have retained an attorney that you attend all scheduled court dates. If you are unrepresented during a hearing, the judge will generally offer more explanation of what is going on, in order to ensure that you are treated fairly. Above all, be courteous and respectful to the judge, court staff and prosecutor - this will get you a long way.
