Are my neighbors crazy?

I have lived in my neighborhood for 2 1/2 yrs. The original builder "declerant" went out of business 7 yrs ago and sold the remaining lots off to other builders in the year 2000. About 1 month ago some home owners decided to form an HOA, which can be done accoring to our covenants writtten back on 1999 if 10 homeowners say that they want to do it.

I'm not happy about this, but I am ok with following the rules, but what scares me is I have spoke to several attorneys and they say that writing bylaws can cost from $3000- $10,000 if nothing major comes up. When I told my neighbors this I was told they didn't want to spend that kind of money, and we are smart people we will write our own bylaws. (That is scary)

I called the SC Real estate commission, and they provided me with a copy of the laws stating how an HOA must be set-up, it is very detailed, and 12 long pages long. I think we are asking for a mess.

Any suggestions?

Answers:
Bad idea. You would be giving up your rights to do what you want with your property. I live in a condo association. I hate it. Do gooders get on the board of directors and act like junior high student council. A few people want to tell everyone else what to do.
