The Government... giving people cancer??
if smoking is so bad for you then why is it still legal ? if it is because so many people are addicted? If so than why doesn't the legal age to buy them go up each year so that someone who is 17 or under now will never be able to but them.
Answers:
I remember hearing that the cigarette companies have funded some of the pres elects campaign and as we all know that if they could get financial backing from a dope dealer they would. So in short they don't care if you get cancer or not as long as they get their money .
Jadeybabe, was that a Freudian slip? When you said on the last line (each year so that someone who is 17 or under now will never be able to BUT them)? +=<%>). Tee Hee, I just got a new pair of eyeglasses (%), I think they go well with my new hat (+=<), don't you? Ido believe you have a good point about the age for purchasing cigarettes, which are lethal bombs.
1. As bad as many feel smoking is, what is worse is a government that restricts one's right to choose whether or not to buy tobacco.
2. It is the responsibility of the user to control how much tobacco is consumed. One who smokes a pack a day should naturally expect negative results. One should also limit their consumption of chocolate, alcohol, Big Macs, soy, Tylenol PM, etc...
3. The government has tried prohibition. Criminalizing tobacco could fill the jails with smokers and give rise to blackmarketers with one more thing to peddle to people.
Your argument seems to take for granted that the government should make illegal all things that cause cancer, or harm your body. No argument that cigarettes do just that, but if you really don't want to subject yourself, just don't smoke.
As for kids, yeah, a certain amount of special care is needed. For one, we could make it illegal for young people to buy them, oh, I've just been told that there already are laws like this. And your phasing out idea is completely unworkable and would surely not stand constitutional challenge.
This is just an example of an idea for a law that goes too far. I consider myself more liberal than conservative, but laws should be generally be reserved for protecting liberties, not stomping them out.
Why is alcohol still legal?
its all up to the user. You aren't forced to smoke or drink. You decide what you want to do. Stop blaming the government for people's dumb decisions.
Just because something is bad for you, doesn't mean it needs to be illegal. I highly suggest you watch the movie "Demolition Man" if you want to see this point demonstrated.
