Wow, that is an awesome question and it really makes you wonder!! I believe if we had a cap on food, gas, oil, electricity, etc...etc..that would ease alot of stress. So yes, I believe a cap should be placed on all those items.
No because if the government puts a price ceiling then it will lead to shortages. Also how would the price be decided? And it is not out of control either.
certainly. I happen to know a man who runs his own gas station and he has the cheapest gas rates around. I live south of Boston and gas prices are running on average $2.93/or higher. But this man sells his gas for a penny compared. $2.76! a twenty cent difference? And when asked why his prices are so low? His reply: Because he can afford to live on what he makes. The man even owns a brand new Hummer. But he says that his prices are more than sufficient enough for his life style. And that is what it boils down to. He says that Gas Companies ARE gouging us. I 'll take it from the man who knows. Why are we paying $4 for a gallon of milk? Why are we paying $6 for orange juice? Yes, we need a cap. Those who oppose it only do so because they end up losing money in the end. And so then they won't be able to have their houses in the hamptons or nice log cabin in Colorado. Or have those 5 cars that they just keep in a garage for the most part. Everyone is basically out for themselves these days. If money can be made someone is doing it.so they have to lie to themselves so they can sleep at night...so as long as we keep needing gas and milk and orange juice.they'll get what they want. Who is "they" exactly? not really sure...but SOMEONE is getting paid generously off our expense!
By putting caps on those things you remove the incentive for providing a service or product. Money. It is easy to say that there should be caps on necessities. But what ends up happening is without the guaranteed monetary incentive producers stop producing. What really helps is competition. Right now there are only a handful of companies that control:
What we eat; fewer farmers and more governmental regulations keep prices artificially low so that the family farm almost no longer exist
How often we get oil; there are only about 5 or 6 oil companies in this country
Limited electrical providers; local companies with city contracts only
As for energy:
One would think this is a no brainier. With increased population you would need new refineries and a more advanced electrical grid or alternative energy sources. Our main problem is the fact that there hasn't been a new refinery built in the last 35 years. It doesn't take a genius to realize how that would set up a situation of supply and demand, or at the very least allow companies to justify why they have to raise prices while they have no plans of building new refineries. We also need to find other sources of energy other than ethanol. What is happening now is that because farmers can make more money growing crops to be converted to gasoline prices are increasing for staples like corn, wheat, and sugar.
Our food:
There are only about 2% of farms left in this country and the majority of those are corporate run. Not good. To make family farms less profitable, larger corporations have lobbied for tighter regulations to allow for internationally grown produce to be shipped here with fewer tariffs. At one point our Midwest was considered the bread basket of the world, now we ship in approximately 70% of our grain. Yes, I am aware we donate the most to 3rd world countries, where is it written that the government can’t deceive us? And since the farming industry is heavily subsidized, a large corporation can withstand an influx of cheaper goods provided on the backs of forced workers in dictatorial countries who get paid well below what is fair.
That said, I believe we are being nickle and dimed to meet shareholder projections of increased profits every quarter.
