Can one use Windows XP firewall and another firewall?
I was wondering if one uses Windows XP firewall and another firewall at the same time, is that double protection or would it make the computer worse off?
Answers:
If the firewall is a software firewall, installed and running on your PC, then it won't offer double protection. If the other firewall is a reputable one, then just turn the Windows firewall off (if the other firewall did not already do so, in its installation).
But...the Windows firewall only checks for/blocks unwanted incoming traffic. It doesn't check/verify Internet traffic being sent from your computer, which is an important part of firewall protection. (The use of bots to control remote--often personal--PCs for things like spamming and denial-of-service attacks on web sites us PCs to send those messages out. A good firewall with check and ask if you wish the communication initiated from your computer to be permitted...for such things as updating your antiviurs, say yes and choose the option to always allow such communications.)
Now, if you are connected to the Internet through a router, you can check...but it is a pretty good bet that the router provides a hardware (or firmware) firewall, making your network more-or-less invisible to Internet probes of the ports at your network's IP address.
A software firewall still is a good thing...and will add to the protection offered through that router-based firewall. (And by the way, at home, I use the Windows firewall nonetheless--behind a Linksys router.)
Yeah, you can do that, but why?
NO never,
only one firewall at a time
You gain no benefit, it's better to use one.
No; you cannot successfully use two firewalls (or two anti-virus programs, for that matter) simultaneously. They will foul each other up in a BIG way.
Definitely... you can but it would only be a pain in the butt because a lot of programs would have to be allowed to the internet through both firewalls, if you are only using two of them that is. three or more would make it worse. So, the use of a firewall and an updated version of a strong Anti-virus would easily do the trick. You will be free of worries.
