What is the current punishment in Australia for arson?
Does the punishment differ depending on how severe the damage was? Please leave a website in which I can find the information for.
Answers:
Arson is one of the very serious crimes, for which you can be sentenced to life imprisonment. The exact penalty and the conditions for each differ from state to state. Have a look at www.austlii.edu.au, which contains all legislation for all states (and the commonwealth, as arson could occur on commonwealth property too). For example, the following is the relevant section for Qld:

Yes, the severity of the damage will be taken into account. For example, in Qld, the Penalties and Sentences Act states the following things which must be taken into account when sentencing a person for any crime:

I'm sure the punishment depends on a variety of factors. I'm unfamiliar with Australian law, but factors relevant to punishment might include damage, intent, and criminal history. It is difficult, if not impossible to answer questions like this, especially without more facts. Certainly beware of anybody giving you legal advice on message boards. Go to a legal library and ask the person at the desk to help you, they might be annoyed if you have no idea how to perform legal research, but they might help. They likely won't have anything better to do anyway.
it's hard to tell.
i guess the court would look at whether it was just mindless vandalism or more malicious intent there. i imagine that the value of damages would be a factor in the punishment. it could also differ state by state. i don't know of a website, but make sure that you look at the laws relevant to your state.

It depends on which charge is laid against the individual. There are many different arson charges and various Acts that they come under and each carries different penalties in different states.
