Disbarred attorney?
A former friend of mine was disbarred in NY State. How do I find out why? I have his registration number but that's it.

Disbarment in New York is done by the Appellate Department in which the attorney was admitted to practice. If there is a decision in a disbarment case, it would be reported by that Department.

If you can't find the attorney's name in a search for decisions, you can use the contact information in the attorney discipline page to call the Department and see what documents are public in a case.
Remember, there are four Appellate Departments in New York...and you'll need to check the correct one. The First Department is Manhattan. The Second Department is Westchester, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Third and Fourth Departments cover upstate counties.
His record might be available from the state bar -- I don't know if NY posts grounds for disbarment or not.
