How much are public defenders paid?

Any information pertaining to public defenders would be great.

Answers:
Anywhere from $35,000/yr starting salary to $65,000 starting. PLUS state benefits (which are usually REALLY good). Contrary to popular belief, attorneys often take Public Defender positions because of the benefits; time off, great insurance, great vacations, no weekends OR holidays, etc. People like to assume that a PD was at the bottom of the class because of the low salary. BUT, they get better benefits than the rest of the attorneys out there.

Not nearly enough. They're typically under-funded.

Its amazing that they can get anyone to work as a PD these days.
Ridiculously little compared to many other "big firm" attorneys -- but that's common for public practice.

If full time, they tend to make about 30% of what a starting big firm associate would make in the same area.

If appointed by panel, most tend to bid (offer their services) at about 30% to 50% of what they can make from private clients.
