What kinds of information can schools legally obtain from you for admissions?
How much personal information can they require of you and which ones can you refuse because of your right to privacy? It is not a financial application per se that is involved. Can they refuse your application legally if there are private questions you refuse to answer? Where can one read about these laws?
Answers:
They can ask you anything they want, aside from questions relating to the various protected classes: race, gender, ethnicity, religion, age, or disability. The school MAY have forms that relate to this information, or may ask about such things, particularly disabilities, after offering you a spot in the school, but may not mix this information with the admissions information or consider any of that information when making its admissions decision.
It depends on what you consider "personal"...
Your grades are allowed to be a factor.
Your mental abilities are allowed to be a factor (to some degree).
Your criminal record MAY be a factor but technically hard to prove or resist.
Your money and the money of your parents (if you are 23 or under) are a factor.
If you give more details, then you will get a better answer.
