Debt Collector Problem, How Can I get rid of Debt Collectors?

Hi

7 years ago I emigrated to America to get away from debt problems after my business went bust, I never went Bankrupt, but the debts were over 50 thousand pounds.

I recently returned for a year to visit Family and opened a new bank account at my Parents House, I just got a letter from a Debt collection agency saying that COOP Bank sold them my two thousand pounds debt two years ago and they want me to contact them to arrange repayments on it, two days later another letter said as I had not responded so of their agents was calling to my parents house and I could be taken to court and be made Bankrupt.

Is there some limitatioin law that stops them from pusuing old debts over so many years? what shall I do to get rid of them?

I have no intention of paying them and I am leaving the UK in 3 months, I just want to get rid of them so my Parents don't get hasslled by the Debt collectors once I have left as there are many other collectors that could surface as a result.

Go to the above link, there is a 6 year limit from the last payment on the origional debt, do not aknowledge the debt or it will start the whole process again, it seems that you are over the time limit anyway.

They will lie and manipulate you to respond, they are unlikely to make you bankrupt for such a tiny sum and it wil cost them thousands to do that anyway.

A friend of mine reccommends offering a derisory 10 pence a week and if it goes to court make sure you fill in the expenses form that shows you can't afford more than that. if you then stop paying 10 pence a week after a while, they will not pursue you further as for 10 pence they are losing more money chaseing you. it worked for her, saved herslft 80 thousand pounds between 20 odd creditors.

Good Luck

Go now
I would try to set up payment arrangements - I'm not sure in the UK, but in the US as long as you are paying even a very small payment, they cannot bring legal action against you.
Shame on you and your attitude. How sad that you can't do the right thing and pay your debts. These people trusted you and you gave your word to pay them so do it. That is very unfair of you and very immature to treat them like this. Why not contact them and make arrangements to pay them back and be an adult instead of a child who runs from their problems?
I just hope for your parent's sake they dont send the bailifs round !..It happened to a friend of mine, after a housemate moved out leaving debts at that address. The address was blacklisted, and now my friend who owns the house can't get credit anywhere. The person's actions caused my friend a lot of stress and I think that you may well do the same to your parents. Your really should seek some sound financial advice as I'm sure you dont want your parents to suffer as a result of your financial difficulties.

Debt companies will keep on selling off the debt to different companies - some can be a lot more nasty than others !
