Can a debt collector do this?
I had a debt collector send me a letter saying that they have a judgment against me in a nearby court/city. I called the court and they said they have no judgment against me.
Can the debt collector send me false info like that? I am disputing the debt.

Under the fair debt collection act, you may have a right to sue for harrasment.
i wouldnt think so it sounds to me like a threat not an attempt to get you to pay your debt. they are just tryin to rattle you up so you would pay the debt. but i wouldnt let them get away with that
Step One: Report them to the Better Business Bureau. Ask if this is a crime in your state, and ask if it is an actionable offense. If they say that it is, ask whether it is actionable under criminal or Civil juristiction.
Step Two: If the false claim is Criminal, report it to the Police Department. Try to keep the original and let them have a copy for evidence. If they insist on keeping the original, make sure you get a notarized copy before you turn it over (preferably before you call)
Step Three: Contact an attorney and find out whether this:
A. Constitutes harrassment
B. Is worth taking to court
C. Should be handled in Civil court or small claims court
P.S. If nothing else, try to get the case settled on one of those television court shows if you can. If either of you lose, the show pays the court costs and if there is no verdict, you split the fee.
