Can we change the law disallowing, just born illegal babies, from becoming US citizens?
It seems there should be something we can do, as Americans
to change that law about an just born baby becoming automatically a free citizen of the US. I was outraged to learn from talk radio yesterday, that pregnant Mexican women are now waiting til they begin labor and head for the border to the first US hospital they can get to, to deliver after their water breaks! That beats all, for me. Sounds like they're swept right across in such an emergency by the border guards. We've got to have a limit somewhere, somehow, now that we're being over run and over populated. Any ideas on what you or I can do? Do we hit our congressmen and women with this? If so, won't we have to wait for new bodies to fill the current seats after next years elections?

Yes, they are called anchor babies. The legislation to change this is already on the table and probably will be a part of the next immigration reform act, when ever that is up for debate and vote. Just call your local congressman and senator and give em hell! Mine is an hispanic and wont listen to anyone not like him.
Anchor baby laws need to go.
We should but do you really think congressmen and going to eliminate future voters?
We're also in big trouble here on health care costs... What do you think the chances are that those mexican women ever pay their hospital bills?
if we did baby gurl guess what you will have to leave too because if you didnt know you whites raped and killed many native americans to steal their lands,so what makes you a citizen ? if your ancestors did today what they did many years ago they would be terrorist, invaders, and criminials and illegal immigrants. so that would make you illegal immagrant so why dont you pack your bags and go to europe!
No.
This is actually in the constitution, so you would need a constitutional amendment. They can't just change a law. It is very difficult to amend the constitution. Last time I checked, there were a grand total of 27 amendments, and the first ten were the bill of rights, done immediately after the Constitution. So, no, they can't just change it. Sorry.
Give these people a break! - you have a better life where you are - they deserve the same - there is good and bad in all people. :-)
I've lived in two countries in Europe, and people here would die laughing if you told them a baby born in their country to two persons here illegally should automatically be a citizen!
Keep in mind Europeans are supposed to be LIBERAL! (What does that make us?)
If you want to stop poor, desperate Mexicans from risking their lives to come here, you must stop the criminals who quite intentionally hire and inhumanely exploit them for hideous profit.
- - - Exactly right PITZZZZ!
That sounds nice, but it would seem unconstitutional . . .
Time-honored practise of ascribing citizenship to place of birth is now time-dishonored. It is senseless in the age of jet travel.
The new-born should acquire the status of its mother, no matter where the birth occurs.
Bahhh...humbug. America is just a bunch of immigrant decedents of generations gone by. with who only knows whos bastards and what nots for citizens, why don't you post this question to a native/aboriginal type site" ...errr is there anywhere like that yet? By the by sounds like your ancestry might be similar to.?? Pheww your guess is not going to be better than mine. Oh well... I guess God loves you anyway.. HITLER
If this continues we won't have to worry about it. They are overrunning us. I think it should be ILLEGAL to have a foreign baby become a citizen automatically. We are NOT the smartest country. Write your senator.
So the law that allowed you to be a citizen is no longer good?
By the way, any sentence that begins "I heard on talk radio today. . ." is a pretty likely source of absolute horses**t. Find out for yourself, do a little research. Don't just believe your radio.
As for the immigration question, I'm sorry that you don't like brown people. I do not think it is a good idea to legislate racism, though.
Damn thats pretty clever. more power to em
Yes. Some say the 14th Amendment to the Constitution requires it, but the amendment wes never read or understood that way. The current law is the result of a relatively recent judicial misinterpretation.
Please choose your words a little more carefully - it's hugely insulting to call them "illegal babies", as if they didn't have the right to be born! It's not the babies' fault how or where they are born. And the border guards don't just let the laboring women waltz in - plenty are turned back, it just depends on the compassion or sternness of the particualr guard.
Yes, I agree it's a clear abuse of the system, but that doesn't mean the law itself is wrong. How would you fairly decide who has the right to be an American citizen? Would you limit it to only people whose parents are American citizens? What about the American-born children of legal immigrants? What about orphans of unknown parentage? Should the sins or virtues or citizenship of the parent be automatically granted to the child? Do you punish a new-born baby for her mother's abuse of the system?
Offer a fair solution before you try to tear down the existing law.
Maybe you do not know this but, it is not only poor Mexican women who are waiting to cross the border in time for their delivery. As you may know, usually tourists get a 4-6 month visa. And guess what? These women are also giving birth in the country. But do not be confused, they are here legally...they may become illegal after a while but their baby, born in USA soil, is a legitimate US citizen. Even if they go back to their country, the baby have a right to get any service offered by the US government. The thing is, what does it bother you most: the fact that these babies are American citizens or the fact that their parents are illegal aliens?... Remember, even if you close the border, there are more than 12 million illegal immigrants in the country and they have an average of three kids per family. Who is going to stop that?
You can write your congressmen, you can become an anti-immigration activist, but they are here to stay, no matter what. Believe me, you have to be desperate to risk your life the way they do and their babies are just a hope to become legal one day...you can say "it's not fair" but they can also say the same.
We can but fat chance of it actually happening. Congress uses too many illegals for their personal servants.
