Previously you could carry a covered air weapon in a public place if you were 17yrs or over. Also anyone sentenced to three months in prison was banned for possessing an air weapon for 5 yrs. Most crims didn't know this until they were arrested that is.
In relation to the possession of air weapons, from the 1st of January 2004, the legislation changed and was ammended by Section 23 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003. This basically says that regardless of age you cannot carry an air weapon (loaded or not) in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. This means that anyone carrying an air weapon in a public place can be arrested.
This is now also the case for replica firearms, including BB guns.
And quite right it is too.
As long as you are 17 or older you can walk in to a shop and by one with no questions asked, or you could just by one on the internet! :)
An air rifle is not considered to be a firearm by the BATF. There may be city ordinances on this where you live. You would need to check on it.
Jimbo's perfectly correct. Only thing that bothers me is that ye appear to be saying the guns are sometimes *Not* in cases?
Aside from the illegality of having an uncovered gun in a public place, that's an excellent way to get to meet the Police Armed Response Unit!
you can buy a air-rifle/pistol anywhere that sells them and you don't need a license, however they can only be used on your property or on private property with the land owners permission, however no pellets that you fire can go outside the boundaries of this land its an offence under the firearms act, you can carry them on the street as long as they are cased, if they are uncased again its an offence and the weapon can be seized by the police. That's all I know, there is a British association for these weapons they would be able to fill you in on my blank spots or your local cop shop will guide you as well if you ask them nicely.
You only need a licence if the power is above 12 ft/lb.
All should be carried in a rifle bag/case in public and UNLOADED
Not to be fired on/near public land or roads and footpaths.
NO....you'll put your eye out!
