If drinking and driving are against the law, then why do gas stations sell so many alcoholic beverages?

Answers:
This is probably one of the best questions I have seen here. Well the answer is simply a matter of business and economics. Service stations used to sell service, but now they sell what sells. Unfortunately, what sells most is cigarettes, alcohol, candy. If it is bad for you, really it is sold in fast stop easy in easy out places.

It is nothing more than supply and demand, basic economics.

Because buying and taking it home is not illegal, whether it be purchased from a gas station or a grocery or a liquor store.
Because our capitalistic society lacks a lot of common sense, and at the end of the day we would rather have the profits and tolerate the death tolls. Insane for sure.
hey.because you buy it and then you can take it home and drink it. thats not against the law.
Another name for those places is convenience stores. Its convenient to get it there than to go all the way to another store.
good question, they probably get a percentage of the fines people pay for DUI's, on top of their profit from all the alcohol.
It is indeed hypocritical. I used to hold elective office and I always questioned why permits to sell alcohol should be given to gas stations. It makes no sense. Some will even go so far as to have an opener on the counter so you can open it before you get in your car. Insane!
WHAT?!?! Gas stations selling alcohol?? That's appalling!! Gas stations in Connecticut DO NOT sell alcoholic beverages.I can't say what it is in other states.maybe half of convenience stores here do, but not if they are gas station convenience stores like Mobil or Hess. I absolutely don't think gas stations should sell alcoholic beverages.it's totally contradictory and for younger folks, it would send the wrong message!
For profits maybe?
The question is based on a false premise that people who buy alcoholic beverages will drink it while driving.

That makes the conclusion that people will buy alcoholic beverages from gas stations and drink it while driving false.

Gas stations sell the alcoholic beverages presuming that those making the purchase will obey state and federal laws.
