In simple terms what is the difference between absolute and qualified privilege?

The above link should help. I use this article when I teach about "privilege".


An absolute privilege works all the time -- no exceptions.

A qualified privilege only works in certain situations -- if you are using it correctly.

Example -- you have an absolute privilege against self-incrimination -- you can never be compelled to testify against yourself.

You have a limited privilege when giving someone a job reference -- the protection only applies if you are telling the truth and not acting in bad faith.
