Can anybody explain why a person would jeopardize a $50,000 a year job?

I continually see correctional officers getting arrested and/or fired for smuggling in nuisance contraband into a correctional institution, for a couple of hundred bucks.

Answers:
Anybody who has spent a few years in any civil service job, including police, maybe particularly police, knows just how corrupt almost all of the system is. From the dog catcher up, our elected employees are as Mark Twain phrased it "America's only native criminal class" .

So most people who are aware of the corruption feel justified in breaking the rules. Based on the general stupidity of those who appear to buy into the myth, they are sure they won't be caught in minor crimes. They don't realize that many of the people who appear to buy into the system are either on the inside, or clever enough to not let on that they know how things work.

umm its a little thing called stupidity ;)
Who said cops were smart?
what she said
Because they aren't very bright, and they look at the short term, not the long term.
Greed, the age old problem...people get caught up into thinking they as correctional officers aren't accountable to other's...lot of times, when you dig into the person's history, it's due to personal finances they can no longer handle..so, they go the route that will make them the quickest money...my other guess...sheer idiocy.
Maybe they are getting something MORE than a couple of hundred bucks?
In all my years in the criminal justice system, I have yet to see a defendant who thought that they would get caught. Everyone who commits crimes think that they can get away with it. Once you fall into the mindset of thinking that you are smart enough to get away with it, the only restraint is your conscience.
its gonna happen, not much you can do to stop it. Maybe its the "perks" you get from doing such. Prisoners respect you. They dont give u much trouble.
First, you have to consider that if they're doing it for multiple people, that couple hundred bucks can add up.

Secondly, are corrections officers really making $50k a year?

Third, they're stupid.
A convict is often the reason.First the convict offers to do small favors for Off. Then bigger things .Off. often has new house, new car, small children Etc. Convict tells Off. If you don't do as I say , I will go to warden and tell him you ,Off. Have been breaking the rules, and you will lose your job.
Asimple explaination . Life behind bars.
