What happens to abandoned postal packages?
Through the years, I have sent some packages that have not gotten to the intended recipient. This last time, the package was sent overseas, but this is not always the case. Sometimes, I ask for the package to be returned to me and sometimes not. In either case, I never see the package, again. Is ther any process for retrieving such packages? what happens to them? ?

Once mail is within the borders of a foreign country it becomes that government's responsibility to deliver the mail. If a foreign mail employee has sticky fingers it is that government's responsibility to correct the problem. In the U.S. if mail is undeliverable it is returned if there is a return address on the outside. If no return address is visible then at least 2 supervisory personnel will open the mail to try to determine a return address. If no return address can be determined then it is treated as abandoned property an destroyed.
