Am I due money?

I received a letter from a "family owned" business saying I was entitled to money as a former landowner. My home was sold in a sheriff's sale for delinquent property taxes. According to the letter I am entitled to money from the government under current law. I searched Indiana's unclaimed money and my name didn't come up. Is there such a law or is this a scam?

Answers:
Your property was sold for back taxes. If there is money left over after the sale and the tax lien is paid,it goes to the previous owner(s). However these sales are in the public record and scammers will search these records. Don't send money to cover fee's etc. Is the letter postmarked from Indiana? They should have a phone # to call is it an Indiana area code?

I don't know...
It sounds like a scam. This doesn't sound right. If you had property and it was sold for delinquent property taxes why would you get any money? I would check the county courthouse for the property questioned.
Have you heard of this family owned business? I'd maybe contact the better business bureau.
indicators that it's a scam is they ask you to send them account information or ask you to provide some sort of deposit. Sometimes they say they'll send you a check, ask you to endorse it then send it back. All scams. Just use good judgment. Maybe contact your local police/ Sheriff's Office and ask if they have had any reported scams regarding this.
Any letter like this that is legit would come to you via USPS and certified with return receipt requested and would have come from an attorney, not a business. Consider it a scam, and be very carefull.
It's possible, but I'd use caution.

If it is legitimate, you will need to provide some information that you don't want to provide if it is not. There will be some releases and tax reporting documents. An attorney can make sure it is legitimate before revealing anything.
