Does making a copy of a CD you own count as pirating?

If you own a CD and make a copy of it (like if you want one to stay at home and one to put in your car), can you get in trouble for it?

Answers:
No, that's definitely allowed. Making copies of CDs, DVDs, software or other copyrighted materials which you legitimately purchased is specifically considered "fair use", as long as you only keep them for your own use and don't distribute them to others. In fact, the RIAA's own website specifically states:

"If you choose to take your own CDs and make copies for yourself on your computer or portable music player, that's great. It's your music and we want you to enjoy it at home, at work, in the car and on the jogging trail."

no, but if you try to sell it then you are in big trouble..nothin illegal about backing up your discs.
no, as long you don't sell it
No, the RIAA has bigger things to worry about. There is no way for them to detect it anyway.
no , you own it right !
i do that no if it's for you but yes if it's for others
i do it for both
probably not.
Yes, you have no right to duplicate anything that is copy-written without the consent of the copyright holder.
It's legally called "fair use" when you own a cd & make a copy for your car or somewhere else. It's when you profit by making copies (and not pay taxes on said profit) that you're breaking the law. You're good to go, kiddo.
