Can anybody give a good reason why marijuana is illegal?
Tobacco and alcohol is illegal and far worse then marijuana especially if you consume marijuana in food and not smoke it. Studies have shown their are no severe long term effects besides lung cancer but come on tobacco causes the same thing. People who are high tend to be a lot more careful on the road then people who are drunk, yet alcohol is legal. Alcohol casuse agression, fights, murders and all sorts of bad things while marijuana causes people to be calm. Marijuana helps cancer patients along with other illnesses. Surveys show that 75 percent of America have atleast tried marijuana. The economy could get a boost if marijuana were legal when they start to regulate it. People wouldn't have to hide it all the time, they would not lose their job if they do it at home. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH MAKING IT LEGAL??
Answers:
BECAUSE IT HAS THE WORD DRUG(OOOOO SCARY)in front of it and people hate drugs... but if it didnt have a attachment to the word drug it would be perfectly legal.
Politics. Use a spell checker next time, please.
It will be another bureaucratic fiasco. Big Businesses would sell it. Regulations would hit private growers. Taxes will hit the buyers. Lawyers will make money off disappointed users. Tax dollars will be wasted.
Aside from that, "How come the anti-smoking crowd is for legalizing marijuana." It seems rather hypocritical.
this question has been asked hundreds of times before. just search 'marijuana' or 'pot' and 'legal'

bytheway you better re look up your studies. even occasional pot users have a 40% higher risk of psycosis (that's going crazy for those who don't know.)
You obvously do not see the affects it has on some members of society like I do. if you did, you wouldn't want it legal.
if it was leagl we would have to pay taxes on it
first you need to know the tobacco industry would fight this to the end, secondly, america needs to figure out a way to tax it, remember its a weed and it can grow basically anywhere! add those 2 up and in my opinion thats why its still illegal
The problem is that the sheeple who vote in this country don't care about facts. They think it's a gateway drug for dirty hippies and lazy losers and there will be no changing their minds, no matter how many facts you present them with. Give it 10-20 more years, when all the older generation die off, and you may see it getting legalized.
Now you're using logic. There's not a whole lot of laws that employ logic. True, marijuana seems to be safer than either tobacco or alcohol. But those are socially-acceptable products on which many U.S. businesses depend for their income.
Marijuana is associated with hippies and low-lifes, and may never get legalized by the establishment. Some states have de-criminalized it, making mere possession safe.
If tobacco were to rear its ugly head only today, it would never become legal. It causes a number of diseases. A marijuana cigarette is 7 times as damaging to your lungs as tobacco. The only reason tobacco is legal and pot is not is because the use of tobacco was so widespread when people started to legislate morality.
It all started out when the cotton growers way back when had competition with the hemp growers. Somehow the cotton industry made a big deal about people smoking and immediately it became illegal.
I have never smoked marijuana nor do I ever intend to, but Im all for the legalization and as far as I can see it would completely screw with the economy. A lot of my friends have done reports on hte possible side effects of legalizing pot and it could either get rid of the national debt or turn America into a god-forsaken sink hole. We're not exactly sure how it will affect us but major companies would try to overtake it. My guess is the Malboro or something like that would try to buy out all the dealers or some new company would arise.
Plus think of all the street pharmacists that would be out of jobs and, well face it..., forced to get real jobs and start living like decent human beings.
Nope. Just as long as the users of pot are willing to accept its consequences I see no reason why it shouldn't be legal.
will create more dumb as*sholes!
The best reason for making Marijuana illegal is the simple fact that the majority of Americans want it to be illegal. As for your data I think you need to check your sources. Aside from the lung disease's prolonged use of marijuana causes tarry build up on the synapses of the brain which affect cognitive ability as well as physical agility. As to the comparison between alcohol and tobacco well look at the problems we have with those two alone and now you want to add a third. Also a driver who is high on marijuana is just as dangerous as a drunk driver. The issue the altered state of consciousness that both alcohol and marijuana create. Finally as for your boost to the economy, that is a pipe dream. The reality is that any tax revenue or attempt to regulate marijuana or any other drug would be doomed to fail simply because it will always be cheaper to smuggle it across the border. Their is already a Multi-billion dollar infrastructure designed to import drugs and that will not go away simply because we legalize marijuana. Also just because the government decriminalizes marijuana does not mean employers will not still test employees and require their workplaces be drug free. All these points are debateable except for my first assertion that the majority of Americans think it should be illegal.
