Is the peer evaluation process (through the violation notices) a little too much like.?
the children in 1984. The government no longer has to police because the children are willing and able to do it for them. Don't you think Yahoo! should employ someone to read through the Q/A to determine what REALLY violates guidlines?? I think that we do a disservice to ourselves by acting as police. We are sensoring each other because we can.a frivolously might I add. Isnt it Yahoo!'s job to make sure the content of their site is kosher??

yahoo has been put in a difficult spot due to the number of people using answers. perhaps the braintrust originally given the responsibility of overseeing YA hasn't the budget or manpower to evaluate users' complaints. maybe the system really IS automated.
either way, with the popularity of answers, yahoo SHOULD employ at least some form of a staff whose only duty is to evaluate complaints and mete out discipline as they see fit.
the opportunities they've given US to police ourselves have been misused, and were not properly thought out. thumbs? stars? abuse?
asking some of the users here to be judge jury and executioner invites the kind of disarray that has caused many a 'good' user to flee YA.
an average day on YA yields about 210,000 questions, if the numbers generated as a part of each question's http are to be believed (try it and see, each day begins at 2007-xx-xx-000000) if even 1% of those questions are reported as abuse, then that's over two thousand complaints that must be addressed by YA staff daily. is it worth it? is it happening? well YA staff... is it?

people have too many opinions and don't like anyone else's. i could say that everyone should police this site, but some people take offense easier than others. if your christian and there is a question about the validity of it they are not going to like it, same goes for any religion. some parents spank their kids some find it abuse. and so on and so forth. let yahoo do it because i don't like the anally repressed on here, they ***** about everything.
I very much sympathize with and support Yahoo's decision. There are a huge amount of offensive and erosive internet material now that is impossible for companies to keep track of or to screen out inappropriate material. Enlisting the users of Yahoo in tackling this problem and purifying yahoo is essential. Apart from the first resource scarcity justification, peer evaluation process also forges a more community-oriented service (people get to influence the information) which would in turn cultivate a sense of internet responsibility which we so lacking in this age.
Frivolous claims we see today are just symptoms of irresponsiveness of some people. I believe (hopefully) peer evaluation would in the long run help cure rather than exercerbate some problems.
