What does the law say about getting permission before using photographs?
I am especially interested in how this relates to school children.

Most schools distribute a generic release form in with all of the paperwork that a parent has to complete when they sign the child up for school and you have most likely already signed away any legal rights.
If they have one, they can even sell the picture if they have a valid release form signed by the parent; it is the parent's responsibility to read anything before sign it.
Even still, a photo if the property of the person who took it and any photo that they took they can legally post to any website unless they are receiving monetary compensation without even having a talent release form. Other forms or media that are exempt are if the picture was taken for a "newsworthy" purpose and qualifies as a "right to know" under the 1st Amendment right (such as any news story).

anyone getting a photo taken to be released in any way shape or form must have a release form signed. if the person who is in the photograph under 18 a legal gaurdian then must sign on their behalf.
I'm an artist i take photo's and i post them on my website. I need to have release form from any other human that I have listed! even if it's a personal web site! It's being displayied to the public..
Both humans should have a copy of the release form. but mainly the photographer!
