depends on the amount. can be anywhere from a municipal citation to a felony. here, its a felony if you steal more than $2500 worth of stuff.
say i steal my neighbor's lawnmower from his yard. it was $700 brand new(yea its huge and it mulches). i would most likely get arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft of movable property. if i took it from his garage i would get charged with burglary which is a serious felony everywhere, so never steal anything from a house, garage, shed, or boat.
It depends on A) what state your in B) how much you stole [dollar amount] C) your age.
There usually a break-off point between misdemeanor & felony, which would affect the penalty. Like, in your jurisdiction, perhaps $1000 is the cut-off point for misdemeanor. Penalty also depends on if you have priors or not. If 1st offense & misdemeanor, you'll probably get restitution & small fine and/or community service.
Also, to add to tragickingdom06, d) how cute you are. Seriously, it matters. Dress for court like you're going to church.
