Does anyone know laws pertaining to apartments?
I live with two roomates in a 3 bedroom apartment. Everyone pays equal shares of $500 a month. The landlord is in a hurry to renovate the 3 units that make up the apartment. She already evicted one set neighbors for being a few days late on rent and renovated the apartment as soon as they left. One of my roomates is planning to move out. The roomate informed us that the landlord is going to end up trying to make everyone move out of the apartment so she can renovate it. It doesn't sound right that the landlord can just say "Get out because I need to renovate this apartment.".So can anyone tell me if they know any laws pertaining to this? Sorry if my explanation isn't all the way clear. Thanks!
Answers:
It depends upon where this apartment is located, and whether or not the apartment is regulated by any state or local ordinance.
If you have a lease, the landlord can only make you move at the end of the lease term, assuming you are complying with the rest of the lease agreement (so pay your rent on time!)
If you are on a month to month lease the landlord can make you move at any time
