Screwed by DirecTV?
I was arguing with DirecTV customer service (talk about the oxymoron) and they cut off my service which was paid up to date and now they are trying to charge me for canceling the service. The attorney general in NC said to sue them, like I can afford that. Any other way to fight this? They have already turning it over to a collection agency.

Call back and talk to the highest member of the staff. Threaten to sue them! You don't have to go through with it usually it will scare them in taking time with you. don't take no for an answer be a belligerent annoying customer... the customer is always right. I have had plenty of problems with them too. Nothing that a little yelling couldn't take care of though!
If you have your receipts and they show you paid up then when they send it to collections just forward a COPY not the original to the collection service and let them deal with it. As for terminating your service they need to have either a written agreement to terminate or a recording of your voice requesting termination or they can not bill you for termination.
The first two answers you have received offer very good advice.
I will add another little bit of ammunition for your cause: Mention Dish Network. Don't be so obvious as to threaten to switch, but go at it more subtly. You might say something like, "My next door neighbour has Dish Network and never has these customer service issues."
Like we all know.competition is healthy.
