Work? stealing? illegal?
so Im 17, and got paid $500.00 from work like last month, but then my mom goes through my purse and takes it, the back was not signed by me, but she cashed the check and then bought a tv for her bedroom and told me she spent it on "my phone bill"
is there anything I can do?
I mean isnt that illegal?
Answers:
Not really because you are a minor living under her roof. From now on I would cash my check and put it in a checking or savings account with just your name or you and your Grandma's name or someone you trust with the money if you need to have a cosigner because of your age.Not very nice of your mom.
You should have her arrested.
yes, in most jurisdictions it is illegal (it is not legal for a parent to steal from a minor child!). The tort is conversion and you can get damages equal to the full value of the thing taken, i.e., $500. The real question is, what are you going to do? You could file a suit in small claims court, but is that really worth $500? I think the other person was onto something -- just deposit your checks immediately as soon as you get them, and put them in a separate account. That way she won't have access to your money.
But to answer your question, as a technical matter, she can be liable.
you should talk to a lawyer
