Whats the difference between punishment and torture?
Can punishment become torture after a point? If so, when does punishment become torture?
Answers:
Punishment is done for correction or as retribution for a wrongdoing. Torture is done specifically to cause suffering, usually severe suffering. However, torture is also a subjective concept and to a certain point, so is punishment. What is considered punishment by some may be considered tortured by others and vice versa. There are some universal concepts: pinching the sh!t out of someone with pliers would be considered torture. Jail is considered punishment. But there are variations: in a sadomasochistic relationship, the pliers might be considered punishment (and they work well; no one wants to risk those bad boys twice) and to inmates, jail is definitely considered "torture." I suppose the line is wherever you and your culture draws it. Perhaps the difference is also rooted in implication: if the purpose is correction, whatever the method might be, then that is punishment. And if the purpose is suffering, whatever the method might be, then that is torture.
Well, torture sure isn't playing loud music. There should be no broken bones, or extreme physical pain. Beyond that I think it is fine. We should punish MORE harshly our criminals and the stinking terrorists, instead of letting them have cable tv and steak dinners.
Well, lets see how it goes. First they torture to make someone confess (too anything) which a person being tortured will do. Then they punish you for the confession. Sounds like a catch 22 to me. Both are useless. There is no problem on this planet that cannot be addressed by focusing on poverty and justice. Real justice; not the kind rich people buy.
Torture is used to extract info - usually Punishment is JUST that - FOR CRIMES COMMIETED
I think it is the name that set them apart besides that it is the legal and illegal aspect like when someone steals they say embezzelment or misappropriation base on his status.
Punishment is retribution for a crime. It's also supposed to be a deterrent so that one will not repeat the offense. In the most places in the United States, it's providing education, physical training, and a dorm while one is learning how to be a better, stronger criminal.
Torture is totally breaking the will of a person, and replacing it with your own. You become his conscience. You set his moral compass. Torture is beyond crying. Torture is beyond screaming. Torture is beyond passing out. Torture is beyond vomiting, urinating, and defecating on yourself. Torture is not punitive. It is not preventive. Torture has only one goal... replacing the will of the person being tortured. People say torture doesn't work. For some, perhaps it does not. Some cannot be hypnotized, some are not susceptible to anesthetics. But, in the majority of cases, one has a threshold. That's torture.
