Why aren't mothers who kill their own children punished harsher?
Seems these days they all get a slap on the wrist ands a few years in the loony bin,

people who kill other people's children get life/death sentences?

Because they get off with the excuse of postpartum depression. It's disgusting. In cases like these it makes you wonder why people are not screened before they have children. With everything else you do you have to have a background check, credit check, and reference. But they will let anyone have a child. I think we should go through all of the prerequisites that adoption parents have to go through before we can have children.
I am sure that everybody knows that Murder and the variable degrees of the offense are based upon the circumstances.
A large proportion of infanticide is the result of post partum depression or psychosis, since there is a clinical reason that the person committed such a heinous act they are considered not guilty by reason of mental defect.

Typically, if the woman is not fit to face trial, she is confined to a psychiatric institution until (if ever) she is fit to be tried. If the woman is convicted of the killings, she might have been convicted of manslaughter rather than murder because of her diminished mental capacity. That would buy her less time in prison and that time likely would be in a psychiatric facility. Someone who kills with full capacity should be punished harsher.
Since you don't even like kids or want to have to deal with them, what do you care?
