Workplace, safety issues. adivce??

i work in an office by myself off the beaten path. the building is old, and many times people have come in just to look around the office. yesterday i was alone when an old man walked in for no apparent reason. he was very akward, and kept looking around as if to see if there were other people in the office. my car is the only one in the parking lot, and i was scared. as i was trying to make casual conversation to tell him the office is closed, i noticed there was no other car in the lot, and that he had WALKED to the building. noone knew that he was there with me. i am a young female, and after many attempts to politely ask him to leave, he finally left, i locked the door behind him. i watched him walk out of the lot and onto the street.

today im at the office again. right now there are people with me, but after they leave i want to go home, would it be wrong of me to leave, call my boss and discuss the matter, asking him of ways to get people in the office with me? advice please!

Answers:
It might be unreasonable for you to just leave and then call the boss, he is expecting you to be there and if you walk off the job, it would be reason enough for him to fire you.

Call the boss and explain what is going on and what your fears are. With the way the world is today, he has to know there are nut-cases out there.

Try to come up with a few reasonable options before you call him. One that you mention is to have at least one other person working there while you are. Another option may be to have a locked door policy, the door is always locked and only opened to admit someone you are expecting such as a customer, the copier repairman or someone else that you know, can reasonably trust or is known by others to be coming to your office for some reason.

If you do implement a locked door policy, I would post a sign on the door to explain that to people. If someone comes knocking that you are not expecting, refer them to the sign, tell them your boss set the policy and you would be fired if you let them in. This gives you an easy excuse for turning people away.

Yes talk to your boss. It sounds like you should lock the door all the time and have a buzzer or bell so you can let customers in. You did not say what kind of business that you are running.
Talk to your boss. At the very least you should be able to lock the doors when you are by yourself (common sense). Ask for a large dog . . . junkyard variety if possible. I work in real estate and found it the most effective tactic for keeping unwanted individuals away from my person.
im sure your boss would understand. go for it.
