Is it illegal to dump your excess garbage in someone elses garbage can on the street?

on garbage day when its time to put the cans on the street for pick up by the garbage truck
Answer:   Yes. If you pay a garbage bill and someone is putting their trash in your garbage they are doing so on your dime. If you put your garbage in someone Else's trash even with their permission and you do not pay the garbage company it is theft of services.
I am very interested to the answer to this question. I was furious one day that some idiot on my street put their nasty old trash in my can AFTER the garbage truck had come. Since I had no idea who did it, I could not take it and dump it in their front yard.
No. Though Common courtesy says you should ask. The Supreme Court addressed this subject over searches of peoples garbage for evidence. The decided that it is fair game once thrown away.
They pay for the garbage bill dont they.? Maybe ask them if you could, or throw them a couple dollars a month...Alot easier to negotiate ,then go and making people think you are looking through their garbage.
Maybe not illegal, but definitely rude.
YES. IT IS ILLEGAL AND VERY DISRESPECTFUL AND DISCOURTEOUS, AND VERY, VERY UNNEIGHBOURLY TO DO SO. NO IFS AND BUTS, IT IS ILLEGAL!
There is a limit as to how many bags each household can put out depending on where you live. It's illegal to put some of your garbage into your neighbors pile and you can be fined. The department of waste sells tags, for about a dollar each, to put on any extra bags of garbage you have.
YES. THAT CAN BELONGS TO ANOTHER PERSON. IN A SENSE, IT IS THEIR PRIVATE PROPERTY. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO PUT YOUR GARBAGE IN IT. STOP BEING SURE A "CHEAPSKATE!" GO OUT AND BUY YOUR OWN CANS TO PUT YOUR GARBAGE IN!
Damn. What a bunch of wacky answers.

Can't put "your" garbage with "my" garbage, lest it will contaminate my GARBAGE.

Reminds me of a case in which people were upset that a guy was dumping his dog droppings in his trash. City told him, "he can't do that." He brought a baby diaper to a city council meeting and said, "These are in the trash everywhere. S h it is S h it!"

He had no further problems with his neighbors.
Sewer guy has the right answer. Trash is considered public domain once it is set out on the street.
