On line movies.what are the legalities?

What are the legal implications of watching movies on line? Say for instance from a site that has Lord of the Rings or similar movies. I don't intend to download but, landed on a site using StumbleUpon. Can I be sued for watching on line?

Unsure- are you infringing copyright just by observation?

If a movie is listed as being in the public domain, you may download them to enjoy as they are no longer under copyright protection.
