Who pays for the damages caused during a high speed chase or other criminal act?
I was watching one of those high speed chase shows the other day and that thought came to mind. Say there's a high speed chase and it happens to go through a residential area... and then it just so happens that one of the cars involved knocks over your mailbox... or crashes into your car. Who pays for the damages? Would you have to file a claim with the state or pay out of your own pocket? Or perhaps sue the perpetrator? -Just something that I was curious about! Answers appreciated!
Answer:
Sue the perp. Although often it's a moot point because the perp might not have any money to pay a judgment anyway. If the perp is found guilty, the state may seize his assets and you might be able to file a claim for a share of those assets to the extent that it covers your damages. Otherwise, hope you have property insurance.
the state IE the police are immune from suit in these cases thus leaving your only recourse is against the person being chase if they have any monies
