Whats the Trouble my friend will get into with the law.?
Ok my friend did something stupid which he regrets. He was working at a gas station and in the middle of the night be stole $2,000 gift cards and bunch of cigaretts then just left the gas station. He took a bus to Las Vegas and is coming back friday. Theres no warrent for his arrest and he is going to turn himself in. Whats the worst sentence he could get? He has nothing on his record.

IF he has no other record and goes in to the store and tells them that he'll make restitution for the cards before he turns himself in he will get a FAR lighter sentence. Maybe just probation if he makes arrangements for retitution on his own and his record is otherwise good.

They will still use it against him. He intended to use them. Only deactivating them prevented that. He'll still get charged with felony larceny for the cards. An offer of retitution for any fees they went through cancelling the cards may still be helpful.
depends on his age. sounds like grand theft with the amount of property stolen. can he make restitution? that would possibly help.
was there a police report made by the owner?
if not...then he doesn't need to turn himself in...but ethically and morally it would be right of him to pay back at least the cigarettes.
if there was a report made and charges filed...probalby a slap on the wrist with maybe probation (is he 18 or older?).

Wow! your friend is surely no genius material. Over $2,000 worht of merchandise is not shplifting, he can get jail time for sure; depending on his laweyer and the DA he can get from a probation to 6 or more month in jail, probably he wont do years but several months is very likekly. Plus now he will have a criminal record for life.
If he pay for all the money he might get the charges droped from the gas station but he needs to talk to them as soon as posible.
