What do you think is a appropriate penalty for Identity theft?

It has sky rocketed as a problem over the last few years, and I am almost certain you are familiar with what it's about. How bad would you like punish somebody if it happened to you? If you found out who the perpetrator was, would you prefer taking the matters into your own hand or let law enforcement deal with it?

I would like to hear your tought on this...

Put them on a chain gang the rest of their lives, since those who's identity they stole will forever be trying to correct it!

I think a year in jail \ prison is fine, and when they get out their social security number gets tagged and a 10% penalty \ tax is deducted from their income for life with the money going to the victims.
