Is it legal to not have a liscence plate on the front of your car?

My friend got pulled over today for not having a liscence plate on the front of her car...We live in Maine. Is it diff. from state to state? Does anyone know the laws for this kind of situation?

Answers:
No, looks like it is required in Maine:

"Registration Plates – All issued plates must be attached to the vehicle and easy to read."

it does differ from state to state

in Michigan you dont need one
It does differ from state to state. In Montana, for instance, you had to have a plate both on the front and the back. Here in NC, just the back.

On a personal note...how odd that we have the same name and very similar avatars! lol
Yes, the laws differ from state to state. In Louisiana, you are only required to have a rear license plate. I moved to Texas where they are required on both bumpers.
Yes it is different from state to state. My friend went to Alabama, there she had no front plate and no problems, came back to Wisconsin where she got a warning to fix the problem. I too was warned about not posting a front plate, the officer stated I was issued 2 plates and thats what I have to post on the vehicle.
All States a differant.
Most states require you to have a front and back plate displayed on your vehicle and the ones distribued by the DMV not the ones people like to make that are cute and stuff. This is so it is easy for and officer to identify your car from either the front or back.
It is probably different from state to state. I am in CA and about 8 yrs ago i got pulled over for not having my front license plate on my car and i was told that "while it is not illegal, it gave the officer a reason to stop me" I don't know what kind of bullshit that is but your best bet is to check the laws in your state.
Depends on the state, it is more common to allow only a rear plate in the south.
I drove to North Carolina from Wisconsin in a friends car and had no problems until we got pulled over coming back into Wisconsin. The cop gave my friend a ticket and told him that the only reason we made it there and back is because some police assume the car is from a state where it is OK and don't look closely enough.
Depends on the state. If the state gives you two license plates, you have to display both.
IN kansas its only in the back.. I can't speak for other states
Depends on what state you live in. Florida is a one plate state. California is a two plate state.
Differs from state to state. New York and Texas you need both. Tennessee you need one on the back.
In Washington not having one is legal. Not sure about my state (OR) but I've never been pulled over for not having it.
It varies state to state. Kansas does not require one on the front, but Missouri does.
i live in Oregon, and got pulled over a few weeks ago for not having a front plate. It is illegal here. Id suggest just calling your local police station, they will tell you yes or no.
In California it is required to have a license plate on the front and rear of your car. However, I grew up in California and I've never had a license plate on the front of my car, nor in the decades I have driven this way have I ever received a ticket.
My son recently got a ticket for this infraction so I guess it's one of those selective enforcement laws that the police can use as a reasonable cause for stopping anyone.
Unless your friend was driving a semi, motorcycle or a car with dealer plates on it, he needed to have two plates. Yes, it varies state-to-state.
yeah, depends on what state ur in. it's not in VA.
Did your friend think the second plate she received when she first registered her car was a spare or something?

Yes, Maine law requires cars to have a front and rear license plate.
