Is this right?
are we abusing our jail system? is it right to send a kid who downloads music to jail or to get sued an unrealistic amount of money? its like the war on drugs and the war on terror, not matter how hard or what punishments you try to push on people, if people want to do something, they will find a way to do it, you cannot control human behavior to a certain extent.
is it right to put people in jail for non violent crimes? in no danger to themselves or others?
and should we learn from past mistakes and actions, and learn from them? if something hasnt worked efficiently, and theres more options, should we change those actions?
Answers:
Should we change the laws to make sense and impose reasonable punishments based on the actual harm...?
YES.
It amazes me that people don't realize those who make the music want to earn a living and that their material is not free to those who want to steal it on line.
copkilla, take a look at who makes the laws that you hate and blame them. Frankly, I wish that our government would sit around and look for laws to repeal, instead of making new ones that limit our freedom. To answer the question, if we have the law, it's got to be enforced by the police.
I don't consider downloading music stealing, but I think people who go into stores and steal things should be in trouble - so I DO thing some non-violent crimes merit some penalty. Jail time, a fine, probation, community service.whatever
While I agree jail should be reserved for violent criminals only...and the rest should get work details.
You also said if people want to do something they will find a way to do it.
The example you gave was stealing...and if you predict the thief will strike again, then jail seems reasonable.
At least until we get the work-gangs set up for all the non-violent criminals
Do you have a better suggestion for punishment? People who committ non-violent crimes are still injuring someone elsemonetarily in this case. They deserve retribution in one way or another to deter them from comitting the crime. Community service maybe? Any better ideas?
Stealing is stealing, no matter how you slice it. When you get caught for stealing, you go to jail. If you want to change the laws then work your way to a position where you can do so. Like the old adage says. If you don't have the time then don't do the crime.
If the law says so - then it is right. Every wrongdoing has an equivalent punishment - as it is supposed to be. Downloading without paying is stealing, right?
If we all practice righteousness, I would imagine a world of peace; Then again, there's always a bad apple, no matter what - that's where we need those laws to implement. Harse punishment? Perhaps, but those punishments were debated and enacted by the people we have eleced to represent us. And for us to be heard - let's do our job - let's go out and vote according to our beliefs...
