Oh yes, Big Brother is watching, but only to a certain degree. By law, law enforcement personnel can monitor the Internet for violations of law, but in most cases they must have a warrant if they wish to monitor someone whom they suspect of committing a crime. EXCEPTION: Law enforcement can monitor the Internet without a warrant when conducting an investigation into sexual exploitation of children (child porn). The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement does this a lot, and they catch a lot of people by doing it.

Yes, CIA, ATF, DEA, NSA, and several others. They run these postings through a number of super computers that look for key phrases and then dump the data into an analyst terminal where further evaluation can be made and local authorities can be notified. The same thing happens when you send cell phone photos or video. The government has to be very low profile about these operations but they store all this information and when the time is right they will bring it out for the show trials and executions.
Of course they are. If you are not doing anything they will not be targeting you.. but anything you type is stored somewhere and if someone wants to get hold of it they can. Obviously there are systems that troll the net and look for key words.
To make an extreme example... say 40 years from now you are running for office. One screen shot or a saved IM and you would be done. A posting just from a teenager saying "they would kill" and it could come back.
I think that these are the days when people are feeling innocent with the net. It won't be long before people realize that the thing typed is forever. You may say as you will but years from now... I am betting anybody and everybody will be slapped down by something even IMed when say 15.
