Does anyone know the federal laws in referance to background checks for employment ?
Just wondering how far back an employer can go, and where I can find the guidlines and employer has to fallow,

There are many providers of public records that employers can subscribe to in order to do background checks. You might try looking at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) website. In my law firm, we subscribe to such providers as Choicepoint, Accurint or even PublicData.com and can find a lot about individuals. I live in Texas as as long as I pay for the information I am looking for I can go to the Texas Department of Public Safety website and view anyone's criminal records - however complete they might actually be. As for the other providers I do have to insert some sort of reason on why I am requesting the information, but it still is very easy to view people's information.
I don't think there are any laws. Depending on the job a company can go back to when you where in grade school, check out your siblings,your parents, the people you associated with while you were growing up.
Get an application package for DEA, the FBI or the CIA. You'll see what I'm talking about
i read something yesterday that some employers even check your credit history to see if you make good financial decisions. it seems as though now adays if you make a mistake in your life lets say you get arrested or you forget to pay your credit card looks like you arent gonna get the job. what ever happened to the days when you when you f 'd up you paid the price once and that was it. as it stands now lets say you do something to commit a felony when your 18 now you 25 and youve changed and learned your lesson to bad you probably arent gonna get hired for any descent job youll either work fast food or have to turn to illegal means to make your money which only further f's you. basically you f up once you f'd for life unless your last name hilton or lohan then you get a free pass. the system is broken beyond repair or at least it seems that way. i know this was rambling and really didnt answer your ? directly but its kinda on the same subject.
