Look at education requirements from it's inception to today. Research yourself the requirements vary upon state regulations as do most health practices. Investigate yourself.

You got it flat wrong. Psychiatrists are medical doctors. They must attend medical school to become a psychiatrist. Perhaps you are thinking of a psycologist.

They are trained professionals, with responsbilities and liabilities determined by the state. They (unlike psychologists or counselors) are licensed to dispense prescriptions for pyshotropic drugs.
Psychiatrists do go to medical school and perform autopsies on the human brain to investigate it function. I think that you may be confusing the medical profession of psychiatry with a therapist or psychologist. Investigate yourself.
the difference between phsyciatrists and phsycologist is that the former has an md just like a physician while the latter does not. therefore the former has been through all the medical schooling and is able to perscribe medications.
Psychiatry is a legitimate science, and psychiatrists are well respected within the medical community.
Obviously, just like in any other field, there are some who skated through the system, and are not qualified to persue a career as a psychiatrist. Fortunately, the system is somewhat self-correcting, since there are license renewals, reviews, etc. to eliminate a lot of the quacks.
Some will continue to slip through, mostly due to their ability to convince their patients that they are doing some good - whether or not they actually are.
Some people just need someone to talk to - to get their feelings out there, or to work their way through stuff. Other people don't need it - and can't figure out why anyone else would.
Judi, they are recognised by the medical field to be real doctors. They can write presciptions so that says something for them. I know the one I saw was an idiot and had me so strung out I couldn't remember my phone number or address. It was after my son died and this (doctor?) was NO help.
Because to be a psychiatrist, you must have an MD. That stands for "Medical Doctor".
A psychologist usually has a Ph.D or a Psy.D, or sometimes just a Masters in psychology. That's different than a psychiatrist.
