Why do people that receive the death sentence live on "Death Row" for years and years?
I would like to know how "Death Row works. People who are sentenced to death for hideous crimes are not put to death! They live on for years to come. Do they even get executed? If someone knows why this is...please share.

I don't know why.....
But i feel we should bring back public hanging and there wouldn't be so much crime in this country......Get rid of the child molesters and murdrers.........
ACLU and year of court reviews.
Because the bleeding heart liberals don't have the balls to pull the switch. This is true mainly because they fear losing a vote.
Because they are allowed so many appeals, prolonging them being put to death.
Because they clog the system with repeated appeal orders for years and years.
Because the criminals have 3 tries at appealing to prove their innocence and that takes years.
they are allowed to appeal & until all their legal options are used, they must remain alive. i'm a "bleading heart liberal" & against the death penalty, so i'm glad this option is available.
Our legal system is extremely biased in favor of protecting the innocent. Something noble in theory. Yet, if you are the victim of a terrible crime, it is extremely insensitive. Nevertheless, with all its terrible flaws, I'm glad we have the legal system we have.
The problem is that there have been a small minority of cases where prosecutors or police have broken the law to gain a conviction in a capital case. This leads to changes in the law to try and make the system water-tight. For an example of this, see the link below and type in Alan Gell in the search box.
So, instead of doing as was done in the UK before capital punishment was abolished there (three weeks after the trial in many cases) we have numerous appeals, some of them mandatory, in the hope we can avoid executing an innocent person.
All this, of course, places incredible strain on the courts and all involved in a particular case. It costs over $1,000,000 more to prosecute a death penalty case than one where life is not at stake. To see the results of the death penalty in North Carolina take a look at the second link below. See how many people go through the system only to get life imprisonment anyway or to die before the sentence can be carried out. The death penalty is actually a waste of money. It is cheaper to lock them up and throw away the key.
Because some idiot has decided that this type of Vermon has rights!! That's why they get free college, dental, medical, cable and internet!
because when you are given the death sentence you are given something called an appeal that means it go to a hire up court its the law of the land do you have any ideal how many people are sitting on death row cause they fit the description read the papers sometime hear in ill countless men sat on D.R. because a lot of these cops want a name for them every patrolman wants to Sarge every Sarge want to be Laue every Laue wants Capt's and every capt wants to be watch commanders ps there are still some great cops out there but they are all retired 25 years pass like that great pension 45 50 k a year ask
unfortunately, they get appeals, and groups like the ACLU trying to keep them alive, by saying it it cruel the way they kill them blah, blah, blah crap.
Some do get executed, like thirty years after the fact.
Most of the time prisoners "sit on Death Row" for such a long time because of the appeals process. In most states, it is mandatory for the defense attorney to file an appeal for a guilty verdict.
In a word or two, "mental torture".
