How guilty would you feel in this situation?
So I purchased a product online to pick up at a local store. When I picked up the product, one of the employees cleared my name from the computerized waiting list before it was delivered. This had the effect of there being no record of me picking up the product.
So I got a $100 product, and the store calls me to say I have 14 days left before the order will be canceled and my bank account will be credited back for not picking up the product. Two, then four weeks go by and there's no credit to my account. I go to their website and it says you have to call the particular store to cancel the order, so I do that and they keep transferring me around and telling me they're not the person who can do this. Finally, I e-mail them at the corporate level and it appears they will properly cancel the order.
So in absolutes, I know what I did was unethical, have you had similar frustrations with the business world trying to keep your money and use this to justify something similar to what I did?
Answers:
The ethical gymnastics in my mind would work it this way: I'd calculate my hourly wage, multiply it by the amount of time spent getting the "run around"...and if that number is bigger than $100 dollars, I'd say its a wash. If they handle the problem appropriately and immediately, you should take the product back, or just send them the check.
Well, it was theft, wasn't it? And no, I wouldn't do that.
I would feel bad
I wouldn't have taken the money because I wouldn't want someone else to screw me out of $100, but I must admit that if $100 just showed up in my account accidentally it would be tempting to "forget" to call about it (although this has happened to me and I did make it right). That's not what happened though. You really went out of your way to screw them out of $100..I would feel bad.
i admit it, i cancelled a order, it turned up when i wasnt in, neighbour accepted it, and they have never taken or asked for the money,
if they asked for it i would give i to them but as they have never asked and they have my details i am keeping my mouth shut,
i dont think it is bad, the company was a huge one, if it was a little old lady in a nearly run down nearly closing down business i would tell her
the big businesses make enough money from customers, through 25% interest when you buy things anyway
keep quiet i did
best wishes, we will both be struck down by some invisible force together i expect
best wishes till then

I believe in "you reap what you sow"
I reconsidered my own ethical beliefs and things seem to be going a lot smoother for me since.
There have been many times I could have come out ahead a few hundred dollars, but honesty seems to get me farther. Plus the reputation as an honest person has a far greater value in my opinion.
You can justify it to yourself if you want, and probably no one will notice or suffer. But I would have been honest. It shocks people immensely too. The reaction alone is quite entertaining. :)
You need to either return the product you have in your possession or offer to pay for it. There really is no excuse for when it come right down to it someone will be paying for it.
It won't be the store.
I think you already feel guilty, and rightfully so. Otherwise, why post this question seeking validation from others for your wrongdoing. Do the right thing.
Oh God people get over it, so there's a little bad karma, who cares, help a little old lady cross the street and your karma is cleared. You got yourself a hundred extra bucks. I wouldn't go so far out of my way to screw them, but you did and whatever.
You should go into politics or start a church you have what it takes.
I guess this makes you a thief. Right?
Your guilt is telling you something..follow through and don't ignore it. Make it right.
Know anything about Karma...?...you will...
I wouldn't feel guilty at all. Whether or not it's unethical is subjective in my opinion. Is it wrong? possibly, but corporations and others in the business world do far worse things to thier customers.
I look at it like this, it's thier sytem that created the snafu, thier stupidity is your gain. I don't see anything wrong with exploiting a loophole.
Well, I think you should do what feels right to you but I would either keep the product and tell them that I have it or take it back and get my money back. You don't have anything to lose because you have what you want. Yep! I've had the same thing happen to me. Someone ordered something and it came to my house. I took the package to the post office and they mailed it back to the company and the company sent it right back to my house. I forgot about it and 2 years later when I moved it got lost or either trashed but I have not see it since.
